The ancient Egyptians believed that death was a temporary interruption and that the deceased, through specific rituals and preparations, could attain eternal life. To ensure the continuation of life after death, individuals prayed to the deities both during their lifetimes and after passing away. Therefore, when life ended, the body was mummified to achieve a status similar to that of the gods. This exhibition centers around mummies from a world-class collection, exploring Egypt's beliefs about the afterlife during the periods of ancient Greek and Roman rule.
The exploration of mysteries is a deep-seated human need. Countless individuals are curious about all aspects of ancient Egypt. The culture of ancient Egypt possesses a unique visual allure and a narrative steeped in mystery. Notions of mummies, gold, and an obsession with the afterlife have contributed to our impression of "Ancient Egypt." The artifacts in this exhibition hail from one of the finest collections of ancient Egyptian artifacts—the Manchester Museum. This exhibit delves into Egypt's beliefs about the afterlife during the relatively lesser-known "Greco-Roman" period in Egyptian history (from around 300 BCE to 300 CE). The Egyptian expectations of the afterlife began during the Greek royal rule and persisted through the reign of Queen Cleopatra VII and the Roman emperors that followed.
