This exhibition, centered on Dunhuang's cultural artistry, ingeniously combines advanced 3D projection mapping technology and ultra-high-definition digital equipment to present over 200 meticulously recreated Dunhuang cave murals, alongside static displays, cultural products, lectures, and educational programs, offering diverse cultural services and experiences.
The exhibition is divided into two main sections: a static display and a light show. The static display features two units - "Architecture" and "Paintings" - guiding visitors through the beauty of Dunhuang caves and murals. The "Architecture" unit explores historical stories, architectural structures, and border patterns, showcasing representative caves including central pillar caves, hall caves, central altar caves, and large statue caves, revealing the ingenuity in Dunhuang's architectural design. The "Painting" unit covers Buddhist sutras, deity portraits, Buddha's life stories, Buddhist historical scenes, donor portraits, and decorative patterns, displaying Dunhuang's artistic aesthetics through details like facial expressions, gestures, and costumes.
In the immersive light show hall, visitors can experience four themed shows: "History of the Silk Road" "Nine-Colored Divine Deer" "Thousands of Buddha Statues in Dunhuang" and "Dance and Music of Dunhuang". Under the guidance of Chang Shana, daughter of Dunhuang Research Academy's former director Chang Shuhong and former president of the Central Academy of Arts & Crafts, over 200 recreated murals by artists Sun Bo, Bao Ying, and others bring these ancient artworks to life. With support from internationally renowned digital projection teams, the exhibition employs 3D projection mapping technology to create an immersive experience blending culture and technology.
"Encountering Dunhuang: Immersive Light Art Exhibition" has toured 12 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Haikou, Sanya, Qingdao, Quanzhou, and Huangshi, attracting over one million visitors and widespread acclaim. CCTV's "News Broadcast" featured the Beijing premiere in its special report on "Digital Economy Driving Beijing's High-Quality Development."
In 2024, the exhibition was selected as an outstanding case study for the "Bringing Cultural Heritage to Life" video collection initiative by UNESCO World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and Pacific Region (Suzhou). It also received recognition as a 2024 National Museum Integration and Innovation Development Case, jointly awarded by the Chinese Museums Association and Xinhua News Agency.
