Alphonse Mucha (1860—1939), born in Moravia (now in the eastern Czech Republic), gained international renown as a poster artist in Paris. He is regarded as one of the greatest artists of Czech origin. Mucha is known for his unique style, with a wide range of works that encompass both commercial art and fine art. Simultaneously, he infused harmoniously his distinctive aesthetics and philosophical ideas into his creations, most notably through his elegant depictions of female figures, floral motifs from nature, decorative patterns, and gracefully flowing curves.
In the eyes of the Parisian public, Mucha established a distinctive "Mucha style," signaling the emergence of a new artistic style. Subsequently, this style gained enthusiastic recognition worldwide, to the extent that even more than 80 years after his passing, his influence can still be observed in comics and various fields of graphic design.
This exhibition will showcase 120 exhibits under 5 major themes. The exhibits include books and artifacts that inspired Mucha, his renowned masterpiece "Gismonda" poster, well-known works from the "Gem Series," and the monumental epic "The Slav Epic."
In addition, this exhibition also showcases works of graphic artists from both the East and the West who were influenced by Mucha. This includes album covers from the 1960s and 1970s in the United States and the United Kingdom, American comics, and early 20th-century Japanese literary magazine covers. These displays trace Mucha's professional career and the artistic trends that were influenced by him.
