Meet Yungang A Public Digital Art Exhibition

“Meet Yungang: A Public Digital Art Exhibition” is a major cultural initiative highlighting cross-regional exchange between Mainland China and Hong Kong. The exhibition is co-hosted by the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation and the Yungang Research Institute, co-organized by China Arts and Entertainment Group Ltd. and Bauhinia Magazine, with China Performing Arts Agency, Beijing Zhongchuang Cultural Tourism Industry Group Co., Ltd., and the Meet You Museum serving as supporting partners. It is strongly supported by institutions and enterprises including the Tencent Charity Foundation, Shun Tak Holdings Limited, Taikang Insurance Group Co., Ltd., Bank of China, Kweichow Moutai Charity Foundation, and Bauhinia Culture Holdings Limited.

The exhibition officially opened on May 27, 2025, at the Bauhinia Arts Exhibition Space, L1 Floor, West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Station in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. It marks the first large-scale presentation in Hong Kong of the digital conservation achievements of the Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a pinnacle of ancient Chinese Buddhist art.

Nearly 50 digital artworks are on display, including 42 high-definition mounted photographs and 4 high-fidelity 3D-printed Buddhist statues, offering a panoramic interpretation of the early, middle, and late phases of the grottoes’ development. Through cutting-edge technology such as 3D reconstruction, virtual reality (VR), and immersive interactive experiences, the exhibition transforms static cultural relics into a vivid and accessible cultural journey. Visitors can engage with the exhibits up close, explore QR-based panoramic guides, and immerse themselves in the grandeur of the Northern Wei Dynasty through VR.

Divided into four themed sections—"Majestic Countenance", "Exquisite Craftsmanship", "Endless Dharma Forms", and "Ancient Charm, Living Legacy"—the exhibition traces the evolution of Yungang’s cave art, showcasing its historical depth, cultural inclusiveness, and enduring significance.

The exhibition is free to the public and operates as a fully public-interest initiative. As a symbol of the cultural bridge from Pingcheng (modern-day Datong) to Victoria Harbour, Meet Yungang brings the millennia-old legacy of the grottoes into contemporary life. With the fusion of technology and creativity, it sets a new benchmark for presenting and preserving world cultural heritage in a way that resonates with the modern era.
