At the scene of the sharing session, Liu Yuzhu, Chairman of the China Cultural Heritage Foundation, first delivered a specialized presentation titled "Innovating the Display of Chinese Cultural Relics through Technology". During his speech, Liu Yuzhu emphasized that technological innovation guides the future direction of cultural heritage, particularly in promoting the innovative transformation of technological achievements. He highlighted the necessity of robust technical support for comprehensive cultural digitization. He advocated for the innovative transformation of technological achievements in the field of cultural relics and the extensive application of digital technology. Specifically, he emphasized the need to enhance the specialization, integration, and standardization of the usage of technology in the cultural field, in order to innovate cultural heritage preservation and advance the digitization of sites such as major archaeological sites and cultural relics exhibitions. We should focus on developing virtual exhibition spaces and creating immersive spaces. Different types of cultural relics demand distinct forms of dynamic exhibition. These exhibitions necessitate standardized technical norms and strategic planning pathways. All of this calls for continuous technological innovation.
In the subsequent discussion, four distinguished guests engaged in insightful conversations, offering their professional perspectives on the rich heritage of Ancient Shu culture and delving into topics such as the revitalization of cultural relics through digital art and effective storytelling about China. The participants included Li Zhongmou, Executive Director of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Museum and former Deputy Director of the Shanghai Museum; Lin Junting, a new media artist and Director and Chief Expert of the Cultural Heritage Digital Art Research Center at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute; Xu Feihong, Lecturer at the School of Cultural Heritage and Information Management of Shanghai University; and Xiang Liping, a Ph.D. in Art and Curator at the Shanghai Art Museum.
Li Zhongmou, Executive Director of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Museum and former Deputy Director of the Shanghai Museum, stated that integrating digital technology and new technological methods into the exhibition of traditional cultural relics is the current trend. However, the techniques of immersive art exhibitions still have a long way to go. They should not only reveal the invisible details of these artifacts but also discover the stories behind them through digital technology.
"How to bridge the gap between the history of over three thousand years ago and our present through the means of digitization is a question we address in our pursuit of digital art. The way of applying our modern technology to exhibition needs to be considered," Li remarked. The "Meet Ancient Shu: Three-Star Piles Immersive Art Exhibition" serves as an excellent starting step.
At the heart of this exhibition lies the fusion of the Three-Star Piles site's context, origins, excavation process, and prominent artifacts with the digital art of light. This integration takes place in an immersive presentation spanning nearly a thousand square meters, offering a truly inspiring experience. Visitors can sit within this space to leisurely appreciate and immerse themselves in the spectacle.
Lin Junting, a digital artist and Director as well as Chief Expert of the Cultural Heritage Digital Art Research Center at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, believes that technology serves as a universal language worldwide. By cleverly interpreting content in this manner, a broader audience can comprehend it. Through such an immersive digital exhibition, it's indeed possible to promote Chinese culture internationally, which holds great significance for museums. For those who haven't yet visited the Three-Star Piles site, attending this exhibition could inspire a desire to venture out and explore. It could encourage us to visit Deyang and immerse ourselves in the experiences of the ancient people who lived on this land three or four thousand years ago, sparking limitless imagination.
Xu Feihong, a Lecturer at the School of Cultural Heritage and Information Management, Shanghai University, participated in the excavation of Pit No. 3 at the Three-Star Piles site. Xu Feihong expressed that the immersive art exhibition left a deep impression on him. The exhibition offers researchers a wealth of details about cultural artifacts. These are often difficult to discern when viewing physical exhibits in museums. When observing these artifacts, the approach should first involve an objective examination of the Three-Star Piles excavation, recognizing it as a unique ancient Chinese culture and a rich cultural heritage. Secondly, one should approach the experience with curiosity, as there are numerous unanswered questions surrounding the Three-Star Piles. This presents an opportunity for collaborative exploration of the excavation's findings.
Xiang Liping, a Ph.D. in Art and Curator at the Shanghai Art Museum, expressed that digital technology will bring a unique experience to future art, allowing us to vividly present historical scenes, myths, and legends that we couldn't otherwise personally witness, as well as invisible things in reality. This immersive way of presentation is truly magical. The exhibition's layout starts with a calm and static introduction, enabling us to gain initial understanding of the Three-Star Piles. It triggers our curiosity and raises questions before guiding us through the exhibition. The enigmatic Three-Star Piles, when considered from a human and personal perspective, might become more understandable and relatable.
