Xue Lijun, Deputy General Manager of Bauhinia Culture (Hong Kong) Holdings Limited, remarked that the Yungang Grottoes, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a pinnacle of ancient Chinese Buddhist art, are brought to vivid life through 3D reconstruction and virtual reality technology. This allows visitors to deeply experience the allure of Chinese artistic treasures and appreciate the continuity and development of outstanding traditional culture. Xue expressed belief that the exhibition would attract widespread attention from Hong Kong audiences and earn enthusiastic praise from around the world, wishing the event a resounding success.
Su Yuhang, Head of the Asia Cultural Heritage Conservation Fund under the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation, stated that the foundation will continue to build cross-sector collaboration platforms, efficiently gather social resources, and leverage its model-leading effects. She anticipated more societal participation to contribute collectively to cultural heritage preservation.
Professor Cui Zhonghui, doctoral supervisor at the University of Hong Kong, highlighted that the Yungang Grottoes Research Institute has applied technological conservation and 3D printing to bring this exhibition to Hong Kong—an initiative of profound societal significance. As a multicultural international financial hub, Hong Kong now hosts Yungang’s artistic wonders, bringing once immovable world heritage treasures closer to the public.
Yan Ding, Deputy Director of the Yungang Grottoes Research Institute, elaborated that the grottoes were the first royal-commissioned Buddhist caves in China, vividly tracing the gradual sinicization of Buddhist art and representing a splendid chapter in multi-ethnic cultural integration. This spirit of openness resonates strongly with Hong Kong’s character as a fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. The exhibition marks the first comprehensive display of digital reconstructions of Yungang’s early, middle, and late phases using 3D printing and immersive VR/MR technology, aiming to sow seeds of traditional Chinese culture in the minds of Hong Kong audiences.
The exhibition focuses on the early, middle, and late periods of the Yungang Grottoes, arranged into four curated zones titled “Majestic Faces,” “Splendid Craftsmanship,” “Enduring Dharma,” and “Timeless Echoes.” Nearly 50 digital works are on display, including 42 framed photographs and four high-precision 3D‑printed Buddhist statues, presenting a holistic appreciation of Yungang’s historical charm and artistic value.
Breaking traditional display norms, the exhibition merges 3D reconstruction with virtual reality (VR), transforming the millennium-old cliffside artworks of Shanxi into viewable, perceptible, movable, and inheritable digital experiences. Visitors can immerse in the grandeur of the Northern Wei through VR and explore panoramic exhibits via QR codes—bridging ancient craftsmanship with digital interactivity.
The opening ceremony attendees included Xue Lijun (Bauhinia Culture HK), Su Yuhang (Asia Cultural Heritage Conservation Fund), Yan Ding (Yungang Grottoes Research Institute), Huang Xiaohua (Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Bauhinia Magazine), Wang Lu (General Manager, China Performing Arts Agency), Qiu Tong (Chairman, Beijing Zhongchuang Cultural Tourism Industry Group Co., Ltd.), Yang Tong (Project Director, Tencent Charity Foundation Hong Kong), Liu Xiaojing (Secretary-General, Taikang Insurance Group Co., Ltd.), Chen Baohui (Assistant General Manager, Private Banking Department, Bank of China Hong Kong), along with other cultural, artistic, and business figures.
